Beginning today Disney, Universal & SeaWorld are all giving out free insect repellent to park goers. Since the arrival of the Zika virus in Miami, many of the tourist areas are taking extra precautions to avoid the virus’ spread through Orlando. According to Visit Orlando Chief Executive Officer George Aguel in the Orlando Sentinel, Local efforts include grounds maintenance and ongoing elimination of standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
During my visit to Typhoon Lagoon Water Park today, I noticed about 3 locations where you could apply insect repellent. At each station there was a cast member at a table with bottles of Cutter brand repellent, as well as a sign with the following information:
Walt Disney World Resort has an extensive mosquito prevention and monitoring program.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent any disease spread by mosquitoes is to avoid being bitten.
The CDC encourages the use of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents and protective clothing.
For your convenience, complimentary insect repellent is available at locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort. Please ask a Cast Member to direct you to the nearest location.
For the latest information, check the CDC website: cdc.gov.
Although I never did spot a mosquito, I did notice a couple of people stop & take advantage of the insect repellent. Most visitors just passed these stations by. It’s good to see these areas take a proactive approach in preventing the arrival of the Zika virus to the Orlando area. Now you can feel that much safer on your next vacation and if you are concerned about the virus, be sure to stop at one of these location & apply repellent.
I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of a deal Disney got with Cutter Brand for the repellent. Hey, they get free Coke why not bug spray?
